چکیده
Development of a new, 3D, modal theory of low-frequency, long-range sound propagation through a fluctuating ocean, including both CW and transient acoustic signals. Comparison of theoretical predictions with NPAL experimental data. OBJECTIVES To develop a 3D modal theory of broadband sound propagation though a fluctuating ocean, including analysis of the coherence function for transient acoustic signals and temporal coherence. To develop computer codes for calculation of the horizontal and vertical coherence functions of transient acoustic signals and temporal coherence. APPROACH Coherence of low-frequency sound waves propagating in the ocean diminishes due to sound scattering by internal waves (IWs), spice, and other ocean processes. Therefore, studies of statistical characteristics of low-frequency sound waves propagating through a fluctuating ocean are important for many practical applications, e.g., underwater communication and assessment of performance of

متن کاملLow-Frequency, Long-Range Sound Propagation through a Fluctuating Ocean: Analysis and Theoretical Interpretation of Existing and Future NPAL Experimental Data
Experimental and theoretical studies of low-frequency, long-range sound propagation through a fluctuating ocean are important for many practical problems, e.g. source detection and ranging, communication, and acoustic tomography. The coherence of low-frequency sound waves propagating over megameter distances diminishes noticeably due to sound scattering by internal gravity waves. As a result, t...
متن کاملCoherence of Low-frequency Sound Signals Propagating through a Fluctuating Ocean: Analysis and Theoretical Interpretation of 2004 NPAL Experimental Data
Studies of the mean field and the coherence function of low-frequency sound waves propagating over long-ranges in a fluctuating ocean are important for many applications, including source detection and ranging. These studies have been done in several papers using different approaches (see [1] for the literature review). For low-frequency, long-range sound propagation, a modal approach for calcu...
متن کاملHorizontal refraction of acoustic signals retrieved from the North Pacific Acoustic Laboratory billboard array data
In 1998–1999, a comprehensive low-frequency long-range sound propagation experiment was carried out by the North Pacific Acoustic Laboratory ~NPAL!. In this paper, the data recorded during the experiment by a billboard acoustic array were used to compute the horizontal refraction of the arriving acoustic signals using both rayand mode-based approaches. The results obtained by these two approach...
متن کاملEvaluation of underwater acoustic propagation model (Ray theory) in a river using Fluvial Acoustic Tomography System
Underwater acoustics is widely used in many applications, such as oceanography, marine biology, hydrography, fishery, etc. Different models are introduced to simulate the underwater acoustic propagation in the oceans and the seas. In this study, the Ray Theory model is used to simulate the acoustic wave propagation in a shallow-freshwater river (Gono River) located in western part of Japan. The...
